The last Cougar basketball game of the season ended last night with a 2 point loss to the Ducks (who picks "Ducks" for a mascot?) in overtime. It was the last game of the season because it was our first game of the single-elimination PAC-10 tournament and I think our overall record (and really bad record in losing 8 of the last 10 games) will preclude post-season play in even the new tournaments (of which I disapprove, but that's for another post, perhaps).
Details of last night's game are here and here. Losing by 2 points in overtime with 13 missed free throws out of 25 attempts and 17 turnovers leads to a lot of opportunities for "woulda, coulda, shoulda"... just like many of the games in the very frustrating last half of the PAC-10 season. Lots of talent, some stretches of great play that showed their potential to play with anyone, but a maddening inconsistency that led to losing after blowing big leads (the worst sequence was a loss to Stanford when leading by 18 points with less than 12 minutes left in the game (see previous post), and then blowing an 11 point halftime lead at Cal in the next game) or losing after getting way behind and then coming back to almost -- but not quite -- win.
But there's always next year, and hope.
