WSU Researcher to study genetic markers for strains of E.coli 0157

by WSU CVM 24. February 2010 13:51

Dr Tom Besser received a three-year USDA grant to find genetic markers that efficiently identify five newly identified strain types of E.coli 0157 in order to differentiate strains that cause human disease from strains that infect cattle but not humans. Researchers will then use the markers to take a new look at the effectiveness of different treatments and strategies that may have different effects on the different strain types. The grant will also involve an outreach program aimed at improving the accuracy of 0157 information going to industry, health professionals, the media and policy makers.
