Dr. Mustaq Memon was recruited in June 2010 for a short term volunteer assignment through ACDI/VOCA’s Farmer to Farmer program to train host organizations on general farm veterinary practices and their beneficiaries on general livestock veterinary issues. Dr. Memon assisted Lebanon University in improving and expanding their existing small veterinary curriculum, and provided guidance on future veterinary program development. His recommendations included securing funding to expand the teaching and research center, and allowing for greater practical experience for the students.

Congratulations to Laura Baltodano, Class of 2013, who will be presented with the Anna E. Worth AAHA Student Leadership Award at the AAHA Annual Conference in March 2013. Laura is being recognized for outstanding student leadership through her service to the WSU Pet Loss Hotline and development of an AAHA Clinical Skills Training Program at WSU.

Dean Slinker and Jerry Johnston (Pfizer) presented the 2012 Pfizer Award for Research to Katrina Mealey from the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for her ongoing research in companion animal pharmacogenetics.

It is awarded to faculty who, according to the CVM's standardized student evaluations, score in the top 20 percentile of the college on the query "Rate the instructor." For consideration as a Newbrey Teaching Scholar, a faculty member must: {a} teach at least 10% of a course in the core curriculum,(or have at least 6 contact hours), and {b} receive standardized evaluations from at least 50% of the veterinary students enrolled in the course. The Newbrey Scholars are recognized each spring for achievement in the previous calendar year.

The Calvin W. Schwabe Award is presented annually by the AVEPM to honor lifetime achievement in veterinary epidemiology and preventive medicine. During his tenure at WSU, Dr. Hancock developed and led a pioneering research program in the field of pre-harvest food safety, especially focusing on Escherichia coli O157:H7. This research program defined many of the key epidemiologic features of that agent in diverse animal populations.
